Waimea Winter

Vera Pound, a Mike’s Camera Sacramento customer, shared some her favorite shots from a recent trip to Hawaii with us. We think they are spectacular and wanted to share them with you all!

“Reef Crasher”

Winter storm waves on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii are best known for producing giant 25′ plus waves for some very courageous big wave surfers. Perhaps what is not as well known is those same waves can crash against the shore making a beach walk very dangerous. This photo was taken on one of those stormy days just north of Waimea Bay at a place called Shark’s Cove.  The cove is surrounded by a coral reef. When these booming waves hit that reef, they shoot 30′ or more into the air. I caught this wave after enjoying the spectacle for an hour or so.

“Shore Break Wave”

DSC_8135 - SHARPENED & CONTRASTED - 16 x 24

The winter shore break at Waimea Bay can get quite dramatic. Big Wave surfers who want to go out where the bigger waves break have to time their entrance into the bay between these shore break waves. I was observing these waves come in to the shore from the cliffs on the north side of the bay.  I kept seeing these beautiful curls and took several shots before getting this one.

“Turquoise Tube, Waimea Bay”

I had moved from the north end cliffs above Waimea Bay to the sand facing the bay.  The lifeguards had put caution tape along the sand to prevent people from being caught unaware and getting washed away.  I was standing well back of this line.  I took several shots of waves coming into the shore, but this thicker wave was my favorite of the bunch.

“Classic Hawaiian Sunset”

The house we were staying at was right on the beach and I had a short walk down the sand to get this shot.  The surfer carrying his board in was a bonus.
